Students from Sifu Meng's Kung Fu Academy in Cupertino took top honors during kung fu competition in the 12th annual Chinese American Athletic Tournament held at De Anza College. Fifteen students from the Cupertino studio and 10 students from another company studio in Milpitas snared 35 medals during the contests held Aug. 11-12.

The Sifu Meng students won the most medals in the competition, which features 300 competitors and up to 10 kung fu schools, mostly from California, said Sifu Meng teacher Peter Hoogduin. James Yuie, from Cupertino, took the all-around championship, beating competitors in kung fu styles, sparring and use of weapons.

Lawrence Chung won two first-place awards for weapons use and kung fu form. His bother, Linus, won first place for weapons use and second place for form. The brothers are from Cupertino.

Frank Zhang, another Cupertino resident, won first place for weapons and hand form in the adult competition. Cupertino resident Nancy Chiu won first place for the use of hands and weapons. Judy Jing won second place in the two categories.

Competitors were judged on the smoothness, power, speed, difficulty and timing of movements. Competitors ranged from 5 to 70 years old. The event was sponsored by Cathay Bank in Cupertino and other businesses. The tournament also featured track, swimming, soccer, volleyball and baseball.

The academy, with a third studio in Oakland, is owned by Sheng Meng, a full-time, all-around kung fu champion in China and Europe. Meng also was a movie star in China.
